Survey Consultant
Period of Assignment: 2 months, to start in January 2013
Founded in 1979, ACF International (Action Against Hunger) is an international humanitarian
organization that delivers programmes in over 40 countries. Recognized worldwide as a leader in the fight against hunger, our mission is to save lives through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition, especially during and after emergency situations and conflicts.
ACF has been active in the NTT district since 2007. Around 40 networks have benefited from a renovation, as have water sources and wells. In the Kupang District, ACF has only been active since 2011.
The district's needs are still considerable, particularly as the number of stakeholders is lower than the neighbouring TTS district. Moreover, ACF is due to launch a Nutrition program in Kupang and WASH initiatives will be implemented in the same sub-districts in order to strengthen the nutritional program's impact.
As the program is now starting the implementation, we are currently looking for a short term
consultancy service for Social/Culture Anthropology Survey (independent or group) and to work in Kupang/NTT Province areas.
Key Objectives :
* To acquire a better understanding of WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) practices, beliefs and habits, on 8 sub districts placed in NTT Province (Kupang and TTS districts), in order to implement ACF activities in the area.
* To obtain a close and realistic picture of the present socio/cultural situation regarding WASH to have a proper ground base for ACF to intervene in the mentioned area.
Methodology:
* Use participatory approach.
* Stay in the villages for the duration of the field work.
* Conduct semi structured interviews with key informants and to use the "participant -observer"
methodology.
Qualifications and Requirements:
* Social studies / social anthropology, PhD or other similar diploma
* Understand of local context and desirable to have specific experience in NTT (Kupang and TTS districts)
* Proven experience in conducting applied research and field studies
* Field experience in data collection and consolidation
* Specific experience in Public Health/WASH surveys
* Experience in rural contexts
Survey should include the following as key questions:
* Housing System (who lives in the house?); are the house aligned and oriented in the landscape
* Kinship and family (who live with whom, where, composition of a typical HH...)
* Structure of power in the community (traditional power, state government, local authority...) and in the HH / family. Who is in charge of children education, budget of the Household
* Perception of hygiene behavior and hygiene education: how and where children are taught to wash hands, defecating habits
* Care for hygiene: how people see diseases, do they know about pathogens, germs
* Other causes for diseases such as magic, loss of part of the soul etc.
