Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is a conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.

Currently we are searching for a qualified candidate to fill the position of:

DIRECTOR OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS


The Director of External Affairs is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive development program that secures the significant financial resources from the private sector, foundations and the public sector within Indonesia to support conservation goals in Indonesia.  This includes;
-  Work with other senior staff to establish fundraising goals and is accountable for achievement of these goals
-  Formulate and develop fundraising plan and estimated revenue
-  Forge strategic alliances with private sector
-  Achievement at fundraising, restricted and/or unrestricted target
-  Motivate and coordinate the efforts of a multi-disciplinary staff team and volunteers in fundraising, including donor cultivation and    solicitation.
-  Responsible for moving a select group of prospects.
-  Focus on long-range strategic priorities, advance the Conservancy’s goals, and communicate a broad vision to others.

The Director of External Affairs plans, implements and coordinates programs to affect government policy and finance across Indonesia.  S/he works to effectively engage governmental entities, in particular finance, planning, bilateral  aid and other Ministries responsible for economic and social development, as well as development missions represented in Indonesia, including USA, Australia and Europe, to further the Conservancy’s mission of preserving biological diversity for the benefit of both people and nature. S/he ensures that the program complies with lobbying laws and regulations, and monitors legislative and administrative initiatives and policies, which are related to the mission or programs of TNC.  Duties include regular contact with local and country-level officials regarding matters pertaining to administrative and legislative actions related to the mission of The Nature Conservancy, and fund raising activity to increase the level of financial support for TNC projects and priorities. S/he does stakeholder mapping, manages relationships with stakeholders and coordinates the relationships with stakeholders.

The Director of External Affairs shares the responsibility with the Country Director, to manage the relationship with the Indonesia Program Advisory Board members.  S/he leads the development of the Indonesia Program Advisory Board structure and engagement which include:
1.  Recruit new board members with a target of twenty (20) new board members within five (5) years
2.  Target a total amount of  gift at US$50,000 for two (2) years, for each of these board members (up to a total of gift of US$1,000,000 for two (2) years from the Advisory Board
3.  Work on a customized engagement plan for each board member targeting an increased engagement of up to 60-70% and ensure that these plans are being executed (engagement plans are operational)
4.  Liaise with all board members to conduct the quarterly board meetings and any specific event.
5.  Serve as the communication gatekeeper between TNC Indonesia and board members
6.  Provide direction to the Communications team on article-writing as it relates to our board members (synchronize the competencies and interests of the board members) and their role in being ambassador of TNC to increase its profile in public;
7.  Ensure personal contact with each board member at least once a month

The Director of External Affairs represents The Nature Conservancy before special interest groups and governmental officials, and works among key government officials to increase support for TNC’s mission and programs.  S/he strengthens TNC’s positioning among government, media, private and public sectors.

The Director of External Affairs will allocate his/her time as follows:
50% on fundraising from private sector and foundations,
25% on fundraising from public sector
25% on policy and government relations

The Director of External Affairs is based in Jakarta and reports to the Indonesia Program Country Director.

Basic Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in political science, government relations, public policy, international relations or related field and 7 years related senior-level experience
· Familiar with legal and regulatory framework for international NGOs developing finance mechanism initiative in Indonesia
· Experience managing and supervising a large multi-disciplinary team and managing a program budget
· Experience in developing and implementing complex projects and strategic initiatives in an unstructured environment
· Experience leading and managing large scale projects, including working with both internal and external stakeholders
· Experience in directing or participating in complex negotiations and presenting to and communicating with government officials, corporate executives, board members and others
· Experience working with partners/government agencies without violating any restrictions related to conflicts of interest, lobbying former employers, or influencing decision makers
· Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in Bahasa and English

Requirements:
· Commitment to the mission and values of The Nature Conservancy, although no prior experience in environmental conservation is required
· Deep knowledge on the legal complexity and requirements for international NGOs setting up sustainable funding model in Indonesia
· Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization and with Conservancy partners
· Demonstrated ability to successfully develop and implement complex projects in an unstructured environment
· Outstanding analytical and project management capabilities
· Superior written and oral communications
· Willingness and ability to travel several days a month, including internationally and to work occasional weekends and evenings
